Experiment overview

An online campaign inspired by my personal awakening to systemic issues, using provocative visual language to challenge our relationship with technology and consumption.

Drawing inspiration from the movie “They Live” and its metaphor of special glasses revealing hidden truths, this project aimed to expose the artificial nature of our digital personas and consumer-driven goals.

Main objectives

This social media campaign used striking visuals and provocative questions to challenge viewers’ relationship with digital culture and consumerism.

Inspired by my own growing awareness of systemic issues, I created content that questioned how we prioritize digital illusions over authentic selves, how planned obsolescence drives unnecessary consumption, and how artificial goals shape our lives. The project aimed to spark reflection on whether our current systems truly serve our wellbeing.

Achieved results

The campaign generated engagement and discussion within social media spaces, with comments and shares indicating that the content resonated with some viewers.

While successful in creating momentary reflection, the project revealed the limitations of social media as a vehicle for deep systemic critique, the very platforms being criticized ultimately contained and diluted the message.

Main reflection

This experiment taught me that social media campaigns addressing systemic issues often remain trapped within the very systems they critique, creating a closed loop where engagement rarely translates to meaningful action.

I discovered that while digital activism can generate discussion, it typically remains superficial, constrained by platform algorithms and attention economics that favor quick reactions over sustained reflection.

This project ultimately revealed an important lesson: you cannot effectively change a system from within its own carefully designed boundaries, a realization that has shaped my future approaches to activism and social critique.
