Experiment overview

A strategic intervention within the European Space Agency’s “The Science Now: Direction Earth” project that integrated ecological awareness into technological innovation processes.

 

The initiative combined panel discussion with hands-on foresight workshops to ensure that creative campus participants considered environmental impacts alongside technological possibilities when developing solutions.

 

Main objectives

The project elevated ecological considerations in technological innovation by illuminating the often-invisible environmental consequences of digital technologies, demonstrating how individual user behaviors amplify or mitigate technological environmental impacts, and equipping creative participants with practical foresight methodologies that integrated environmental considerations into their solution development processes.

   

Achieved results

The intervention expanded participants’ innovation frameworks to include ecological impacts alongside technological capabilities.

 

Through the educational keynote, participants gained awareness of digital technology’s substantial environmental footprint, while the foresight workshop provided practical tools for anticipating the long-term environmental implications of proposed innovations.

 

By guiding participants through structured questioning processes, the workshop established new habits of consideration that balanced technological advancement with environmental responsibility.

   

Main reflection

This experience demonstrated that effective technological responsibility requires integration at the ideation stage rather than as an afterthought.
